New addition to FAQ section. Question is "I need a wide printer but not sure if I should go thermal or laser. Which one should I use". Craig Keefner of KIOSK contributes objective guidelines for consideration. One of the more relevant is the life cycle of the printer. This becomes particularly important in large and longt erm deployments. As size and duration of a deployment goes down, so do considerations on which printer to use. |

Interesting to see whitepaper from one of the major airline check-in vendors exploring the possibility that CUSS is dead. In the whitepaper they examine impact of internet check-in on CUSS. The CUSS initiative does seem to have stalled in the US. The Airport authorities haven't bought into them (no need to and not enough incentive from IATA) and the airlines are not known for being extravagant especially in these days and times of jet fuel.

The key to the service is a proprietary USB interface that transfers data at a faster average rate than standard USB devices. A standard-definition movie can be loaded onto a memory device in 8 to 60 seconds, depending on the length and chip speed. High-definition movies, which won't be available initially on the service, can be downloaded in 18 to 45 seconds. The USB interface works just fine with the USB slots on PCs and notebooks.

DT Research announces digital signage options at the tradeshow this week. These are 15 and 17 inch models and include a touchscreen so that given a customer impulse the "digital signage" changes to an interactive kiosk. The digital signage vendors as whole are in Las Vegas today and tomorrow showing their wares. That industry struggles with identifying ROI and profitability. Target has some new displays they are trialling in stores near the medicines/lotions section and at least there they can track merchandise examined and sold and correlate back to presumed digital signage influence. That's the closest we've seen to establishing ROI.

It's a sad fact that a certain percentage of self-service devices just don't work for whatever reason. The good news is that the ratio of works to doesn't work has increased to well over 80%. The check-in kiosks for hotels at least by IBM seem to be snakebit for lack of better phrase. They are beginning to remind us of Kodak claim of 120,000 kiosks in locations (of which it seems maybe 20,000 don't have a black screen). Maybe grabbing the real-estate and client is more important in the long run but it still irks us to see.

Digital signage is getting a lot of airtime at buzz portals. Several of the tradeshows have added a digital signage wing to try and capitalize as well. As long as they don't use the phrase "Interactive digital signage" we see great potential (albeit unproven ROI-wise so far) for digital signage to complement transactional terminals. Many of the transaction kiosk terminals that people like KIOSK deploy have large overhead and side LCD displays that are purely for signage. Signage which ultimately is designed to drive transactions (which is where most money is made and everyone likes to make money at some point...). Worth noting that KIOSK has now split out separate resource page for digital signage and these providers are very skilled in hybrid signage and transaction solutions (SATS). |
