Couple of stories on hacks and security in the last few days. One was some comments regarding the need for lockdown on systems (common knowledge & practice to use those) but this one caught our eye because 1) it was a thin client (easiest to lockdown), 2) it is in prison systems (very fast growing market unfortunately), and #3 inmates simply exploited the legal software they were entitled to use. The system design was probably very secure but flaw exploited in 3rd party software. Common story...

More news from NCR and how they figure 11,000 machines over the next 2 years is realistic. First they sign on big "blockbuster" client, then they take minority stakes in TNR and E-Play to get locations, and finally they bank on the fact that Blu-Ray is actually a good thing since the heavier digital weight (1.5Gb versus 4GB) works to their delivery advantage. Remains to be seen though if Netflix with it 3-prong strategy (delivery, streaming and Xbox/MS) ultimately prevails..

In financial news Wincor Nixdorf names new CEO for U.S. division. In related news RBR research over in UK raised Wincor into the #2 spot for worldwide ATM deployments. If we had to guess -- in the U.S. it is still a battle between NCR (36%) and Diebold (35%) with Wincor around 20. The lack of service network in the U.S. is likely Wincor's biggest disadvantage (and which they are probably focusing on improving...). In the U.S. it is safe to say Wincor is here to stay.
